Conservation genetics of the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus): low mitochondrial DNA variation amongst southern Australian populations.

Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) populations in southern Australia have a history of bottlenecks-earlier this century the species became extinct in South Australia, and almost so in Victoria. Subsequently large numbers of animals from island populations (founded from very few animals) have been translocated back to mainland sites and to other islands in the region. As part of a larger study of th...

Non-invasive evaluation of physiological stress in an iconic Australian marsupial: the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are the only extant representatives of Australia's unique marsupial family Phascolarctidae and were listed as nationally Vulnerable in 2012. Causes of mortality are diverse, although the disease chlamydiosis, dog attacks, collisions with cars, and loss of habitat represent the principal reasons for the continued species decline. Koala breeding facilities in Queen...

Anatomical and Radiological study on the skull of the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)

Four koala heads were used with the aim of studying the anatomy and radiology of the skulls. This study may establish baseline data necessary to help in understanding, interpreting x-ray images and treating some of the respiratory diseases or surgical affections of the head. In addition, it may pave the way for future functional and comparative anatomical and radiological studies. The peculiari...

Evidence for the occurrence of rumination-like behaviour, or merycism, in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus, Goldfuss)

This paper provides the ®rst account of merycism in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), and in doing so, potentially sheds new light on the occurrence and signi®cance of this behaviour in other herbivorous marsupials. Koalas ®tted with acoustically sensitive transmitters, to monitor mastication and ingestive behaviour, were also found to make bouts of rhythmic `mastication-like' noises that were n...

Metabolites of dietary 1,8-cineole in the male koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

The in vivo metabolic fate of 1,8-cineole was investigated in six male koalas. Koalas were fed ad lib a diet of Eucalyptus cephalocarpa leaf with a 1,8-cineole concentration of 2.53+/-0.70% dry mass of leaf, corresponding to a 1,8-cineole intake of 2.4+/-1.1 mmol/kg (3.1+/-1.3 g). Urine and faeces were collected for 24 h and metabolites identified by GC-MS and LC-MS. Metabolites were quantified...
